Abstract:

Modern mega-data centers are being built around the world for various cloud
computing services such as Search, Web mail, and online social networking
applications. Designing scalable data center network (DCN) architectures that
scale to millions of servers is a challenge.
Specifically, the design needs to provide high network capacity for various
data center applications, be fault tolerant, and cost effective.
In this talk, we will present our container-based, modular data center
network design and implementation. Our design uses only low-end commodity
devices and merchant silicon. The design scales smoothly from thousands to
millions of servers. We will also present a specific hardware, ServerSwitch,
which we use to implement our design. As a platform, ServerSwitch provides
programmable and high performance packet forwarding and data processing by
leveraging the advantages of both merchant switching chips and commodity
servers.
