Abstract:

Visualization is an interdisciplinary research field with ever expanding
applications in medical imaging, scientific computing, engineering,
bioinformatics, and data mining.  It can help people gain insight into
large and complex datasets using computer graphics and imaging techniques.
Developing useful visualization systems is a challenging task, which often
involves domain knowledge, information graphics, cognitive psychology,
human-computer interaction, and graphical design.

In this talk, I will introduce some research projects in my group such as
intuitive and effective medical visualization systems, volume
visualization on mobile devices, visualization of hyperlinks among web
pages, and visual analysis of Hong Kong air pollution problem.  In
particular, some general visualization techniques we have developed such
as a framework for editing direct volume rendered images, effectiveness
metrics for volume visualization, and controllable edge clustering for
large graphs will be presented.

Biography:

Huamin QU is an assistant professor of the Department of Computer Science
and Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. His
main research interests are in visualization and computer graphics. Prior
to his academic career, he had many years of experience in scientific
simulation and commercial software development. He received a BS in
Mathematics from Xi'an Jiaotong University, China, an MS and a PhD in
Computer Science from the Stony Brook University.
