A Survey on Automated Visualization Design

PhD Qualifying Examination

Title: "A Survey on Automated Visualization Design"

by

Mr. Yuzhe JIANG

Abstract:

Visualization plays a vital role in exploratory data analysis and visual
storytelling. Through combining data features and visual embellishments,
visualizations can effectively deliver more information in an engaging and
memorable manner, making full use of people's visual perception. However,
creating visualizations is not easy, which requires a lot of time effort and
design knowledge. The growing popularity of visualization in recent years
brings increasing attention for automated visualization design, aiming at
lowering the barrier for visually analyzing data and communicating data stories
by automatically generating visualizations, instead of manually specifying.

In this survey, we review previous studies on automated visualization design.
We first introduce the background, motivation, and challenges. Then a taxonomy
is proposed based on the works we review. The related papers are divided into
three categories: automated design of statistical charts, automated design of
storytelling visualization, and automated design of style imitation. In the
end, we summarize potential opportunities and new challenges in automated
visualization design. Future work is also discussed to guide our research.
