Title: "A Survey on Transition Techniques in Narrative Visualization"

Abstract:

Narrative visualization communicates data insights by integrating
storytelling and data visualizations. It often presents multiple data
visualizations in a logical sequence. Then how to keep viewers orientated
and engaged between consecutive data visualizations becomes a critical
issue. Animation is a promising method which can smooth the transition,
facilitate the perception of changes in graphics, and increase the
engagement of viewers. However, crafting effective animated transitions is
challenging. It is often difficult to reduce visual clutter and enhance
visual tracking when animating multiple components in graphics. Moreover,
revealing the relation between complex data graphics requires careful
design.

In this survey, we firstly review how animated transitions are applied in
practice through case studies. After that, we discuss related papers based
on what tasks animated transitions work on, namely, enhancing visual
tracking and revealing relation. Finally, after combining the survey
results of real cases and research papers, we identify opportunities for
future research.
