PhD Qualifying Examination

Title: "A Survey on Music Emotion Perception and Recognition"

by

Mr. Bin WU

Abstract:

Music is one of the primary triggers of emotion. Listeners perceive strong
emoti ons in music, and composers can create emotion-driven music. Researchers
have gi ven more and more attention to this area because of the many
applications such a s emotion-based music searching and automatic soundtrack
matching. These applica tions have motivated research on the correlation
between music features such as timbre and emotion perception. Machine
recognition methods for music emotion hav e also been developed for
automatically recognizing affective musical content so that it can be indexed
and retrieved on a large scale based on emotion. In this survey, we give an
overview of music emotion perception and recognition. Moreover, we have done a
preliminary study that shows significant correlation between brightness and
positive emotions. We have also developed a semi-supervised learning method
that achieves good performance for machine recognition of music emotion.
