Prof. Huamin Qu Received the IEEE VGTC Visualization Technical Award 2023

Prof. Huamin Qu, chair professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), was awarded the "2023 VGTC Visualization Technical Achievement Award" recognising his broad and influential contributions to all areas of visualization, including urban informatics and human-AI collaboration.

He has made significant achievements in the field of visual analytics, with his most notable contribution being the development of novel visual analytics systems for a wide range of applications, including Urban Informatics, E-learning, Smart Manufacturing, Fintech, and Speech Training. Many of these systems have been adopted by industry and garnered media attention from reputable sources such as IEEE Spectrum, Japan NHK TV, Tech in Asia, and Southern China Morning Post. He has played a pivotal role in expanding the scope of Visual Analytics Science and Technology (VAST), introducing new techniques, and creating groundbreaking visual analytics systems, such as VisMOOC, WeSeer, and LoyalTracker, tailored to different application domains. His expertise in Urban Informatics is evident through his extensive publication record and the development of systems like SmartAdp, TelcoVis, and StreetVizor, which analyze complex and diverse spatiotemporal data related to transportation, air quality, and urban planning. In recent years, his research has focused on human-AI collaboration, where he has made significant contributions to the fields of explainable AI and AI for visualization. His notable works in explainable and trustworthy AI include RuleMatrix (VIS'18) and ATMSeer (CHI'19), which received coverage from MIT News. He also developed VBridge (VIS'21; Honorable Mention) and M^2Lens (VIS'21, Honorable Mention). In the realm of applying AI to data visualization, his works "Towards automated infographic design" (VIS'19), "Structure-Aware Visualization Retrieval" (CHI'22, Honorable Mention), and KG4Vis (VIS'21, Honorable Mention) highlight his contributions. Additionally, he has co-authored two influential surveys on AI for visualization, shaping the research agenda in this emerging and important area of study.

He has also graduated 40 PhDs and more than 10 of them are now faculty members in China, the USA, and Singapore. It is worth mentioning that his student Aoyu Wu won the 2023 VGTC Visualization Dissertation Award, the first from Asia. Besides his students, he has influenced and nurtured many other junior researchers in China and has played a significant role in the rising of visualization research in Asia."
