A blockchain is a transactional database or "distributed ledger" that theoretically has no delete functionality, and it is is essentially a system for solving problems. Every time it solves a problem, it gets a block, like a building block for a building. Blockbuilding requires timestamping to convey trust to the group of people using the blockchain, and this timestamping is popularly called "mining." Although it has often been promoted as providing decentralization, safety and anonymity, it's practical application is not necessarily so.

Blockchain technology is basically a destination in digital reality for people to transfer their trust to for their financial, contractual and record-keeping needs. It is already being implemented for cryptocurrencies, smart contracts, supply chain auditing, intellectual property protection, the Internet of Things (IoT) and other applications. It it is a means of identifying, controlling and trading digital assets, which represent some form of physical asset or useful information. The process involves digitization, tokenization and symbolization of material assets so that they can be easily mapped and segmented, and the core of the process is representing the uniqueness of each asset via cryptography. The ultimate goal is the formation of a pervasive global digital kingdom run by technocrats.

Blockchain technology incentivizes the voluntary contribution of compute, storage and bandwidth resources to build the global digital kingdom by promising reward, trust and increased knowledge and information for participants. Trust is offered through a framework in which the majority of relevant participants agree by consensus that timestamped transactions are unchangeable thanks to clever cryptographic, proof-based techniques. Reward is offered through tokens or other forms of credits given to participants who compete to be the first to perform computations that successfully verify and timestamp transactions. Increased knowledge and information can then be offered to a world with an insatiable appetite to know more.
