The final year project (FYP) is a year-long project that includes several required deliverables, an oral presentation and one optional contest entry:
You have all summer to brainstorm, research, read and plan for your FYP/FYT. Then, you must submit a proposal report by 23:59 on Thursday, September 20, 2018. Your CT will provide detailed feedback on this after the deadline.
Every FYP/FYT team must submit monthly reports for October, November and December/January. They are all due in the FYPMS by 23:59 on October 31, November 30 and January 15, respectively.
Every FYP/FYT student must submit a 600-word analytical essay about an ethical issue that (if possible) is related to his or her project/thesis. It counts for 5% of the final grade. 20% bonus marks will be given to students who submit their essay by 23:59 on Friday, October 26, 2018.
Your progress report is due by 23:59 on Thursday, February 14, 2019. This report is a revision of your proposal. In general, it tells what you have completed, what is partly finished and what is still not started yet. Your CT will provide detailed feedback on this after the deadline.
Your final report is a revision of your progress report, and it should include everything you did to implement, test and evaluate your work. It also discusses the results and provides a conclusion and an abstract. It is due by 23:59 on Wednesday, April 17, 2019.
If you are part of an FYP group with 2-4 members, you must submit a self-assessment report by 23:59 on Wednesday, April 17, 2019.
After you finish your final report, you need to make a poster to summarize your FYP or FYT. It is due by 23:59 on Thursday, April 25, 2019. It will probably be displayed on the 1/F near outside LTB, LTC or LTD in mid-May.
Your oral presentation is the climax of your project, when you tell your advisor and second reader what you did. For some students, it is the climax of their entire university education, so feel free to invite your parents and friends to attend. Most students will need to give their presentation on the last Saturday of April or the first Saturday of May. Be sure to practice, since the time is short.
Each FYP/FYT group must submit their program code on a CD/DVD to the CSE Admin Office by 17:00 on Friday, May 3, 2019. Use a permanent marker and clearly write your group and title of the FYP/FYT on the CD/DVD itself; also write the date.
Each FYP/FYT group may submit a demo video of their project/thesis to compete for the best video demo awards. Entries must be submitted by CD/DVD to the CSE Admin office in early June. Winning team(s) will receive a cash prize of HKD1,000 per team, and their videos will be used by the CSE Dept. as promotional tools.
