FYP FAQ for Students

COMP/CPEG Mixed Groups

We encourage the mixed FYP group composed of CS and CPEG students. To form a mixed FYP group (CS+CPEG), the CS students have to follow the CPEG FYP course code and register in COMP391/COMP392 (summer), COMP4991/COMP4992 (Fall/Spring), instead of the CS FYP course code which is COMP4982 (Fall/Spring).

As this is regarded as deviation from curriculum by the ARR, to avoid any future problems you may encounter during graduation check, please fill out the GR-14 form and submit it for approval. You may ask Ms. Brenda Tam () for preparing the form for you.

To register in COMP391/COMP392 in the summer(2011), please submit your on-line request through the course registration system.

Intern/Exchange Students

For COMP or CPEG students who would like to work on a COMP FYP during their internship, please refer to the following guidelines:

  1. Please approach your prospective FYP advisor and seek his/her approval for supervising your FYP during the period of leave. You should state clearly the time frame of your placement or exchange. If you are doing a group project, before your seek the approval from the advisor, you should seek the agreement from your group mates that you will be taking the FYP during your leave.

  2. After getting approval, you should register for the FYP project online and ask your advisor also to accept your registration online.

  3. Students should still follow the due dates for various reports and program code as specified on the FYP page. However, a student may seek a delay of the Presentation & Demo and Poster Due dates if he or she is unable to be present on the specified dates. Such delay requests should be made to the FYP Coordinator via the student's advisor.

Please consult the FYP coordinator for approval before the leave; otherwise the above guidelines for internship students will apply.

Honor's Track Students

The honor's track students may choose to do an individual thesis (called FYT). In that case the student will register for the COMP4982H, instead of COMP4982.

To maximize the likelihood of completing a MPhil thesis in the fourth year, honor's track students are advised to choose an FYT topic that they are likely to continue to work on for the MPhil degree. Please discuss that with the FYT advisor.

All requirements for the FYT and the deadlines for submission are the same as those for the FYP.

A student taking COMP4982H can participate in a group FYP. The supervisor of the group may consider the contributions of that student in the group project and adjust the grade accordingly.
