Speaker: Prof. Dit-Yan Yeung, Professor and Acting Head, CSE HKUST

Abstract:

The terms 'artificial intelligence' (AI) and 'machine learning' have never been so popular. This talk will start with disambiguating some commonly (mis)used terms related to AI and machine learning. It will then be followed by a quick look at some recent research projects of the speaker. In the last part, some social implications of AI will be discussed.

Biography:

Prof. Yeung received his BEng degree in electrical engineering and MPhil degree in computer science from the University of Hong Kong (HKU), and PhD degree in computer science from the University of Southern California (USC). He started his academic career as an Assistant Professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) in Chicago. He then joined the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) where he is now a Professor and the Acting Head of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. His research interests are primarily in computational and statistical approaches to machine learning and artificial intelligence. He is also interested in developing novel machine learning models for various applications particularly in computer vision, education, and recommender systems.
