Abstract:

In this talk, a generic framework for monitoring continuous spatial queries
over moving objects will be presented. The framework distinguishes itself
from existing works by being the first to address the location update issue
and to provide a common interface for monitoring mixed types of queries.
Based on the notion of safe region, the location updates from the clients
are query-aware and thus the wireless communication and query reevaluation
costs are significantly reduced. In this paper, we devise algorithms for
query evaluation/reevluation and for safe region computation in this
framework. Enhancements are also proposed to take advantage of two practical
mobility assumptions: maximum speed and steady movement. The experimental
results show that our framework substantially outperforms the traditional
periodic monitoring scheme in terms of accuracy and CPU time while only
incurring a wireless communication cost close to the optimal scheme. The
framework also scales up to large monitoring systems and is robust under
various object mobility patterns.

Biography:

Haibo Hu is currently a Ph.D candidate in the Department of Computer
Science, HKUST. His research interests span a variety of areas of mobile
computing, pervasive computing, spatiotemporal databases, with an emphasis
on data/resource management issues In particular, he is interested in
indexing and query processing techniques for moving object databases.
