AUTONOMOUS VEHICLE LOCALIZATION

PhD Qualifying Examination

Title: "AUTONOMOUS VEHICLE LOCALIZATION"

by

Mr. Bohuan XUE

Abstract:

Localization is a fundamental part of high-level robot application.
Traditionally GNSS- based method will fail when the robot is near high-rise
buildings or in tunnels etc. Data distortion, noise, and other factors make
robot localization tasks still challenging. This survey provides a systematic
overview showing the current works and gaps. This survey starts with a brief
introduction to the task of localization. Then we introduce the common
perceptual sensors on autonomous vehicles: camera, LiDAR, and Inertial
Measurement Unit. By classifying localization tasks into two categories, namely
SLAM and map-based localization, We point out the differences in their tasks.
Then we review the methods with a particular technical roadmap. Finally, we
provide three promising directions by analyzing the existing gaps and
concluding the survey.
