Abstract:

Nowadays, Video streaming is playing an important role in Internet traffic.
Multimedia delivery over the Internet has evolved rapidly over the past decade.
The video streaming protocol has transitioned from User Datagram Protocol to
Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)-based technologies. Especially, Dynamic
Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) has been a standard for Internet video
streaming. Researchers and Industry practitioners have spent great efforts
designing and optimizing rate adaption mechanism to efficiently support the
rapidly increasing traffic in multimedia delivery. Many adaptive bitrate
algorithms are proposed in order to deliver video quality that matches the
throughput of dynamic network conditions as well as provides a richer user
experience.

In this survey, first the background information of Dynamic Adaptive Streaming
over HTTP is introduced. Second, a description of well-known bitrate adaptation
schemes are presented, including heuristic and machine learning-based. Third,
comparisons between different schemes are listed. Finally, concluding remarks
are provided.
