Query Evaluation under Updates

PhD Qualifying Examination

Title: "Query Evaluation under Updates"

by

Mr. Qichen WANG

Abstract:

Traditional query evaluation engines are based on static or batch
scenarios. The major drawbacks of these engines are the high latency and
storage requirement. A data explosion has occurred in recent years, which
has given birth to applications that require real-time query evaluation
and various approaches for the incremental maintenance of query results
under updates have been proposed over the years. In this survey, we first
provide a brief introduction and the major challenge in this field. Then
we review the recent advances of incremental techniques for evaluating
queries under updates. Furthermore, the advances of the field are also
leveraging stream processing engines (SPEs) such as Flink and Spark. We
emphasize the connection between stream query processing and continuous
query evaluations, as well as some basic streaming algorithms. Finally, we
conclude by discussing possible future research directions.
