A Survey on Music Emotion and Timbre

PhD Qualifying Examination

Title: "A Survey on Music Emotion and Timbre"

by

Mr. Chuck Jee CHAU

Abstract:

The emotion inside music becomes a popular research topic by the advancement of
artificial intelligence for music recommendation based on emotion. Better
music-making devices available on the market also allow interactive tools to
easily generate sounds during performance with adjustable timbre for emotional
effects. This paper is a survey of music emotion research, and the study of
timbre of music instruments. The representation of emotion and timbre are both
discussed. Recent research on the correlation of music emotion and timbral
features is reviewed. A brief discussion on the preliminary study of
non-sustaining instrument sounds is attached, and it provides a promising
direction for further timbre research.
