Title: "A Survey on Data Dissemination in Wireless Sensor Networks"

by

Mr. Xiaolong Zheng

Abstract:

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have been applied in a variety of
application areas such as environment monitoring, structural protection,
military surveillance etc. Most WSN systems, once deployed, are intended
to operate unattended for a long period. During the lifetime, it is
necessary to fix bugs, reconfigure system parameters, and upgrade the
software in order to achieve reliable system performance. However,
manually collecting all nodes back and reconfiguring through serial
connections with computer is infeasible since it is labor-intensive and
sometime even impossible because of the harsh deploying environment.
Hence, data dissemination over multi-hop is desired to facilitate such
tasks.

This survey discusses the challenges and requirements of data
dissemination in WSNs, reviews existing works, introduces some relevant
techniques, presents the evaluation metrics and comparisons of the
performance of state-of-the-art works, and finally suggests the further
directions in data dissemination studies. This survey in depth elaborates
and compares existing approaches by two categories: structure-less schemes
and structure-based schemes, classified by whether or not a dedicated
structure is constructed during the disseminating process.

In existing literatures, different categories have definite boundary and
no tradeoff is analyzed before. Besides, new techniques such as
Constructive Interference (CI) have the chance to change the working
framework of data dissemination. In conclusion, even though many efforts
have been made, data dissemination in WSNs still needs a lot of work to
realize practical and efficient applications for deployed systems.
