Full biography in text

I conduct applied research on multimedia and mobile computing systems using machine learning and data analytics techniques, overcoming critical industry-driven operational challenges to support cost-effective large-scale services by bridging the "last mile" divide between laboratory and marketplace users. In contrast to theoretical or fundamental research, my team has been working closely with companies to research and develop novel, distributed and deployment-ready solutions which impact and advance the field. We apply rigorous algorithmic, computational and optimization techniques to relentlessly close theory-practice gaps so that our systems operate under the most general and realistic environment. Our systems go beyond proof-of-concept prototypes or demonstrations, and can be fully integrated into industrial operations with unmatched performance through technology transfer and entrepreneurship. I keep a strong team of researchers (postdocs, PhD and MPhil candidates) and regular engineering staff, whose work closely knit together so that our research drive engineering excellence while deployment challenges drive our research agenda. Our work has been extensively supported by leading companies such as Boeing, China Mobile, Cisco, Google, HP, Huawei, Mei Ah Entertainment, Microsoft, New World Development, TCL, Tencent, etc.

Widely known for their practical nature, direct impact and deployment success in industry, my systems have won many awards. The following lists some of my research projects which have been or are being transferred to companies with users (mostly supported by industry-government collaboration program through Hong Kong Innovation and Technology Fund (ITF) and LSCM Center):

  1. AI + Healthcare
  2. SmartAP: Ubiquitous people sensing and user analytics
  3. Wherami: Client-based indoor localization technology
  4. Lavinet: An advanced multi-hop wireless infrastructure for pervasive and high-throughput Wi-Fi access
  5. Streamphony: A novel cost-effective video streaming cloud over the global Internet
