Abstract

We present a comprehensive system for weather data visualization,
integrating polar system, pixel bar charts and parallel coordinates with
tailored design. Weather data is in essence multidimensional and
time-series, which contains geographical information and an important vector
field formed by wind speed and direction. These unique features
differentiate weather data from ordinary multivariate data, and pose new
challenges in visualizing the data. We hence developed several novel methods
to facilitate knowledge discovery, including circular pixel bar charts
embedded into polar systems and weighted complete graphs for correlation
overview and parallel axes ordering. To evaluate the effectiveness and
usefulness of these tools, we applied our system to visually analyze the air
pollution problem in Hong Kong. Various interesting patterns have been
detected, providing us new perspective to understand the air pollution
problem and possibly leading to new analysis directions for domain
scientists.
