Title: "A Survey on Automated Test Generation for Android Applications"

by

Mr. Jiajun HU

Abstract:

Since the first release in 2008, Android has experienced a prosperous progress
in mobile app development. Its app store, Google Play, contains millions of
apps with billions of downloads and is still undergoing a fast growth. These
portable apps attract a large user base as they provide necessary
functionalities that can drastically facilitate people's daily life. However,
it is challenging to guarantee the quality of apps as they are usually released
to market without adequate test. To facilitate the testing practice of mobile
apps, plenty of academia and industrial techniques have been proposed to
automatically generate tests for Android apps. They differ from each other in
the strategy they adopt to explore an app under test (AUT).  In this survey, we
conduct a systematic literature review on automated test generation for Android
apps and categorize them according to their test exploration strategies. The
primary goal of this survey is to study the insight behind the design of each
technique and compare their strength and weakness, based on which we point out
several possible future research directions that could make existing techniques
more effective.
