Abstract

Stop motion is a popular animation technique. However, its traditional way
of production is a laborious process. To create the effect of a target
object moving on its own, it requires animators to manually move the
object in small increments and to take one static picture of the object
for each increment. In addition, stop motion animations nowadays not only
focus on static frames, but also combine with moving scenes, e.g.,
writing, drawing, and hand interaction such as hand clicks and waves,
which allow more interactions between the animators and the objects or the
scenes. In this thesis, we propose a video-based method to create the stop
motion video, which is capable of animating objects in a more smooth way.
A video editing tool tailored for the new inputs is also implemented. In
our method, animators perform both static frames and moving clips
continuously, without extra operations such as shooting and photo/video
mode switching. More importantly, animators are able to concentrate on the
capturing process, therefore achieve better time performance than the
traditional method. We conducted a user study to demonstrate that our
method is efficient and provides smooth capturing experience for novice
animators to generate paper cut-out stop motion videos.
