PhD Qualifying Examination "A Survey on Transmission Reliability in Wireless Sensor Networks" Mr. Hoi Lun Ngan Abstract: Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are soon to be integrated into our daily life applications. Compared with the Internet model, the data delivery mechanisms and models in WSNs are different. With many sensor nodes connected together to form a networked application, how reliable their data communication could be? In this survey, we will ana-lyze the necessity of reliable communication in WSNs and the factors which affect the provision of such services. In particular, application-specific and data-centric requirements will be examined. A model of transmission reliability based on existing research will be summarized to aid differentiating various reliability requirements. General and selected cross-layer design techniques will be presented.
