Miss Meng XIA

Abstract:

The use of the Internet technologies in education, the increase of online
learning resources, instrumental educational software, and the establishment of
official databases of student information have created large repositories of
online learning data. All this information provides a goldmine of educational
data that can be explored and exploited to understand students' learning and
design better learning support service accordingly.

In this survey, we discuss how visual analytics could help different
stakeholders (i.e., learners, instructors, researchers, and administrators) in
the online learning environment by gaining insights from the massive online
learning data. We first introduce the background of online learning and the
motivation of analyzing online learning data, followed by pointing out the
oppotunities and challenges using visual analytics. After that, we summarize
all kinds of online learning data that have been or can be utilized to perform
learning analysis. Then we discuss the learning analytics requirements in
detail from the perspective of stakeholders based on existing work. Further, we
show typical and concrete examples of how visual analytics have fulfilled these
requirements. The survey is concluded with a discussion of the role
visualizations have played and the potential research directions of visual
analytics for online learning data.
