Improving time management for students through the use of an educational game

Abstract

The poor time management skills of Hong Kong students have raised many problems in learning. For example, University students need efficient and effective ways to plan their work schedules to meet deadlines. To address this issue, we are developing an educational game to help students better understand the importance of efficient time management. Through the use of the software, they are able to develop proficient methods of time management. Essential parameters in time management are embodied as different entities and attributes in the game. The effectiveness and usefulness of our game will be assessed by a set of surveys. Surveys will be given before and after using the software. Improvements to the student's time management skills will be observed and the results will be analyzed for future reference.

1. click here to download the game
2. Open the executable. Choose a folder which you have write permission. E.g. "My Documents".
3. Follow the installer's instructions, it will create "VideoSetup.exe" and "RealityFactory.exe" in the game folder.
4. Open the "VideoSetup.exe" to choose the suitable video format and save the setting. Best viewed in 800*600 windowed mode.
5. Open the "RealityFactory.exe", the game will start.

Trouble Shooting

1. My game is running very slow!

   • Try to set up the display by using the VideoSetup.exe. Different machine can be optimized by different video display.
   • Select smaller screen size in VideoSetup.exe

2. My game is still running very slow!

   • Configure the window display:
     1. Right click empty Windows desktop and select Properties from the pop up menu.
     2. In Display Properties window that appears, click Settings tab.
     3. Now click the Advanced button, and in another ... Properties window that appears, click the Troubleshoot tab.
   • Update your display card drivers.
   • Download the latest DirectX drivers from here
   
   

3. My game is running out of Virtual Memory

   • Select smaller screen size in VideoSetup.exe
   
   

4. I can't play the game in any ways!

   • Download and play it in some public computers. Like HKUST's Computer Barn A or Barn B areas
