I am currently a 3rd year PhD Candidate at the
Department of Computer Science and Engineering,
HKUST. My supervisor is
Prof. Qiang Yang. Before I come here,
I got my B.Sc. Degree in the Department of Computer
Science and Technology at Nanjing University
in June 2007. During my undergraduate studies, I was a member of the
LAMDA Group under the supervision of
Prof. Zhi-Hua Zhou.
Generally speaking, I'm doing research in
machine learning
and data mining. My current
research interests can be found in the research interest section below.
I became interested in algorithmic programming contests during my undergraduate
studies and participated in many programming contests like
acm/icpc,
TopCoder, etc. From this year onwards, I'll become the PG coordinator of HKUST acm/icpc
programming contest team.

Research Interests
- Machine Learning: Probabilistic Graphical Models, Conditional Random Field, Hierarchical Dirichlet Process
This is the MOST RECENT topic
I've been interested in. However, I appear to be a complete novice right
now in this topic. So I would rather say nothing. :)
- Machine Learning Applications: Sensor-Based Activity Recognition
Sensor-based activity recognition aims to detect what
the agent does by providing a series of different kinds of sensor readings
over a series of time slices. My major interest in this topic is to exploit
the unique feature sensor-based human activity recognition has, and provide
specific and appropriate machine learning tools to help solve them.
- Web Mining: Understanding the "Activities" of Web users in the Virtual
World
My primary research interest in Web mining
lies in understanding the human activities based on their Internet usage.
More specifically, I'm doing some research on understanding Web query intentions,
which can be short, ambiguous and thus making them difficult to analyze
the underlying intentions behind.
- Automated Planning: Action Model Learning
In
action model learning, we propose to learn the applicability conditions
of each action automatically by providing a series of plan sequences as
input. Such plan sequences may have partial observability. We are now planning
to propose action model learning in some complex domains such as HTN.
- Bioinformatics: Protein Subcellular Localization Prediction
We propose to understand the protein subcellular localization
problem from different learning perspective, e.g. semi-supervised learning
or other new learning frameworks to better utilize the knowledge we have.
