WACM Summer Conversations

It is summer time! While some of us will be away for part of the summer, many of us will be around most of the time in the summer. For those of us who are around, we can gather informally and talk about our current work or things that are on our mind. The goal of organizing this event series is to provide women students, especially junior ones, an opportunity to meet each other, to share our interests, experiences and thoughts, and to interact with invited speakers in an informal and friendly setting. We hope Summer Conversations will become a wonderful platform for women students to establish our social networks as well as broaden our horizons.

We will meet this Tuesday 2-3pm at the Graduate Commons (Room 5589A or lounge depending on the number of participants).

The speaker for the first meeting will be Professor Qiong Luo, who will share her experiences on research and graduate school.

About the Speaker

Qiong Luo is an Associate Professor at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). Her research interests are in database systems, parallel and distributed systems, and scientific computing. Current focus is on data management on modern hardware, GPU acceleration for data analytics, and database support for e-science. Qiong received her Ph.D. in Computer Sciences from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2002, her M.S. and B.S. in Computer Sciences from Beijing (Peking) University, China in 1997 and 1992 respectively.

SACM/WACM Founding Celebration and PG Happy Hour

The PG Happy Hour is an event to stimulate communication among students, faculties and alumni. This is a tremendous opportunity for students to share interesting ideas and experience, perform brainstorming, present research outcomes, learn the latest news of the department and relax themselves.

For PG Happy Hour in May 2015, we will also celebrate founding of the HKUST Student Chapter of ACM. Exciting events, delicate gifts and delicious food/drinks will be prepared.

If you have any suggestions, or would like to volunteer to help, contact the current SACM/WACM officers.

Fall Barbecue

The Fall Barbecue is one of the department's largest social events for PG students during each fall semester. We organize a large barbecue, which provides delicious food, including drinks, pizzas, veggie burgers, and snacks to those fortunate enough to be in attendance. The barbecues have traditionally been held at the barbecue sites on campus. Students and faculties of the department are invited to attend - graduate students, faculty, staff, and their families.

If you have any suggestions, or would like to volunteer to help, contact the current WACM officers.
