Words from Students
Sin Hiu Ching
1-Year Placement, PricewaterhouseCoopers
Claudia Sin, our final year COMP student in Academic Year 2007-2008, worked in PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), one of the Big Four auditors, as a one-year intern after her year two study.
“ Working in PwC, one of the biggest audit firms, gave me an insight into the business world of accounting. First and foremost, as a one- year intern, I was considered a regular member of the team from the first day. I was offered the opportunity to rapidly learn the necessary skills to support more than 3000 PwC staff in HK. Since I was a full-fledged member of the team, I also participated in all the team activities such as team meetings and team building events outside of work. These events showed me how the teams cooperated with each other, how to improve team efficiency, how to access and evaluate the team, etc. Furthermore, the work was really challenging, because any delays or mistakes could be very serious. There was no relaxation until all the work has been done and we took the work seriously. In exchange I had gained work experience that is pretty close to the real world.
Joining the placement program certainly builds up your confidence by developing your strengths. You will know the industry better and finally build up a clearer career path for your future job hunting. It was my pleasure to join the placement program at the CSE Department and it is one of the most remarkable experiences for me."

“ My time at Microsoft HK Ltd. is the one that I will never forget. Working in the world's biggest IT company allows me to gain valuable insights of this fast-changing industry. Once you join real business, you will soon realize how the reality differs from what you've learnt in classroom. At the same time, you will be given a chance to test your genuine business abilities."

Final Year Project Arrangement
Final Year Project (FYP) is a compulsory course requirement for all undergraduate students of the department. It is a project in an area of specialization in Computer Science under the guidance of a faculty member (FYP supervisor). It is designed to enable students to integrate the classroom materials from several courses and to apply them to solve practical problems.
Normally, students are required to start choosing their FYP topics in the spring semester of their year two study. For students taking one-year placement, they can choose to complete the FYP after they come back from the placement, OR, with the permission from their FYP supervisors, they can choose to work on the FYP during the placement period. (More information: FYP FAQ for Students)
Exemption of Industrial Training by Summer Internship or Placement
Students participating in the summer internship or one-year placement program are eligible to apply for exemption of industrial training modules.
Students who wish to replace the industrial training modules with the summer internship or one-year placement should submit an application form to the Industrial Training Center two weeks prior to the commencement of the internship or placement. They are required to compile weekly activity log and complete a Placement Report within two weeks upon the completion of the internship and placement.
