FAQ for Students

Final Year Thesis

Students with at least a CGA of 3.70 (A-) or strong research interests have the option to do an individual thesis (FYT) under the supervision of a faculty member. This option is for students who would like to pursue PG research studies. If you are interested, please discuss with the faculty member who has posted a FYT in the system. All requirements for the FYT and the deadlines for submission are the same as those for the FYP.

In this case, CSE students should register for COMP 4982H (3Y cohort) or COMP 4981H (4Y-DE cohort) while CPEG students for COMP 4992 (3Y cohort) or COMP 4989 (4Y-DE cohort).

3Y/4Y-DE/COMP/CPEG Mixed Groups

We encourage students to form "mixed" FYP groups composed of 3Y, 4Y-DE CSE and CPEG students. Due to fact that each of these 4 groups of students has a different required FYP course code which carries different number of credits, the departmental guideline is to allow student to earn the higher number of credits. As this is regarded as a deviation from the respective curriculum by the ARRO, to avoid any future problems you may encounter during graduation check, you are required to fill out the GR-14 (for 3Y students) form and GR-23 (for 4Y-DE students) form. For CSE students, you need to submit it to Ms Brenda TAM (csbrenda @ cse.ust.hk) for approval. And for CPEG students, submit to Miss Vicky YUEN (eevicky @ ust.hk) for approval. The following table summarizes the possible combination of mixed groups and the FYP course code the group members need to register:

Possible combination of 3Y/4Y-DE/COMP/CPEG Mixed Groups and the FYP course code the group members need to register

Please take special note that COMP4991 starts in the summer of 2014. Thus, for groups with 3Y CPEG students, ALL group members need to register in the summer in order to get the full credits.
