PhD Thesis Proposal Defence "Making Digital Painting Organic" by Mr. Siu Hang Chu Abstract: Painting is one of the most appreciated and practiced art forms throughout human history. Today, this art has also turned digital through the use of digital paint systems. Although digital painting has been around for over three decades, there are still things left to be desired. The biggest problem, as many artists argue, is that computer images tend to lack a natural look. Strokes made using many of the existing paint systems are too flat, too clean because they use some simple 2D mark-marking methods. In this proposal, I focus on the further development of digital painting technology. Specifically, I attempt to bring the spontaneity and complexity (and fun!) offered by real paint brushes and water-based painting media into the digital world. I propose new physically-based methods to efficiently capture the complex behavior of real art media. Results to date are very satisfactory and our prototype is now being used in various real-world art projects.
