PhD Qualifying Examination "A Survey on Cooperation in Self-Organizing Mobile Ad Hoc Networks" Mr. Susu Xie Abstract: In self-organizing ad hoc networks, some sort of cooperation is needed to run the whole network because of the lack of infrastructure. As a basic example, nodes in the network have to forward packets for each other in order to enable multi-hop communication. However, misbehavior can occur because selfish nodes benefit from deviating from cooperation such as saving powers or improve their access to service relative to others. Incentive mechanisms are then proposed to give nodes incentive to cooperate, especially in packet forwarding. In this survey, some of them, including payment system, reputation system and the formal framework in game theory, are discussed to give an overview of the state of the art in this field.
