Title: "A Survey of Recent Advances on Non-Photorealistic Animation and
Rendering"

by

Mr. Zhenjie ZHAO

Abstract:

Non-photorealistic animation and rendering (NPAR) refers to render and
animate images with expressive artistic styles. Compared to photorealistic
computer graphics, NPAR is easier to attract audiences’ attention and
convey affective attributes, e.g., comfortable, aesthetics, emotion, etc.,
which is particularly useful for visually illustrating culture related
concepts. For example, to appreciate Chinese folk custom, poetry, etc., it
is better to render and animate images in ink-water style. In museums, how
to present cultural heritages in an interesting and engaging way is
crucial for public education for raising people’s emotional well-being and
building cultural confidence.

This survey starts with an introduction of NPAR, including its brief
history, representative works, etc. And then two important areas of recent
advances on NPAR: neural style transfer and dynamic illustration, will be
introduced in detail. Neural style transfer renders a stylized image by a
class of biologically inspired vision models automatically. Dynamic
illustration facilitates non-professionals creating moving stylized images
that can better illustrate stories and engage audiences. The survey ends
with a discussion on several future works that we plan to conduct for
cultural heritage illustration.
