Title: "A Survey on Representation of Biofeedback Data in Stress Management"

Mr. Zhida SUN

Abstract:

Stress-related health issues have an influence not only on an individual's
general condition and quality of life, but also on social cohesion and
stability. With the availability of wearable sensors and the diversity of
quantitative tracking methods applied to the personal sphere, people are able
to obtain self-knowledge about their stress levels through psychological
records (e.g., heart rate, skin conductance, etc.) related to one's internal
state. However, from the interpretation and manipulation point of view, the
user experience during diagnosis and/or treatment in helping people reduce
their stress levels as well as providing practical and nonjudgmental feedback
vary through different types of media. Thus, how to design and represent a
digital experience that supports stress management has become an active
research area in the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) field.

This survey aims to investigate the design modalities of biofeedback data
representation for stress management. It starts with an introduction to the
survey's background, and preliminaries to the psychological terms and
representation categories scoped in this survey. After that, we review the
related applications/systems along the proposed taxonomy based on design
modalities, i.e., Visualization, Physicalization, and Sonification, and discuss
them along the design dimensions of Encoding and Interaction. The survey ends
with a discussion on future research directions within the data representation
domain.
