Abstract:

Various types of wearable devices (e.g., smart watch, wristband and smart
glasses) are penetrating into our everyday life. They provide personal and
detailed daily health monitoring, cognitive assistance for users in cognitive
decline, and flexible user interaction with ambient environment. Part of them
are already available in products whereas others are research prototypes. There
are several common factors concerning the design of wearable devices: user
comfort, limited battery life, user heterogeneity and data privacy. Researchers
and engineers tackle these challenges from different aspects. With the powerful
microprocessor and highly sensitive sensors, a number of stories in science
fictions are coming true.

In this survey, we first give an overview of existing commercial wearable
devices and research prototypes. After that, we summarize key concerns in
designing wearable devices. Finally, we summarize our survey and discuss future
research directions for wearable computing.
