How’s
the current SARS situation in Hong Kong?
The World Health Organization (WHO)
lifted its recommendation against non-essential travel to
Hong Kong on May 23, allowing visitors to once again enjoy
the city. WHO made their decision after establishing that
Hong Kong authorities had brought the outbreak of atypical
pneumonia (SARS) under control.
For more information about the SARS, please
refer to the Hong Kong Severe
Acute Respiratory Syndrome web site.

What would happen if I get SARS while in
HK and my company's/university's health insurance doesn't
pay for my hospitalization?
As a precaution you are advised to purchase adequate travel
insurance covering both accidents and medical needs, we will
not bear liability for any uninsured participants. Some
insurance companies do not impose additional charge to cover
SARS infections. As usual practices in other international
conferences, IDEAS2003 does not bear any liability for any
unforeseen occurrence during your trip to or from Hong Kong.

Does HK have a public health care plan for SARS?
Hong Kong remains vigilant against SARS
infection. In particular, staff working in the airport's
restricted area will have their temperature checked to
assure travellers that the airport is SARS-free. The Hong
Kong Department of Health has set up a telephone hotline in
Hong Kong (+852 2961 8968) to provide public health
information about respiratory tract infections. Hong Kong's
medical facilities are among the best in the world. If you
require emergency medical attention, Emergency Service (Police, Fire, Ambulance) is available by dialling 999. In non-emergency situations, ask your hotel's concierge or contact the nearby hospitals.
