Dear Sam:

So, you are gone. I was planning to visit you in Hongkong this December, but the opportunity to see you in person
is no longer possible. Our fond memories remain, however.

I was going to share with you many of our fond memories
of the time you were at UBC, when we organized a number
of conferences together, including te IWPTS'88 (we co-founded that has now become the Testcom conference), PSTV,
and FORTE. I also recall the times we worked together
in various joint research project (staring with the IDACOM project on Protocol Testing), in various department committees, and even had lots of fun, productive and sociable times at various conferences in Europe
(Germany, the Netherland, etc.) and in Korea (Cheju island), Hongkong, etc...

For years, I realized how much I missed and needed you,
a sharp, dedicated, caring, harworking, strong-willed and
kind-hearted colleague and researcher,
after you left UBC (to move to HUST/Hongkong
since 1993).

In the last year of your life (I did not realize then),
I was really touched of the very warm emails you sent me
sharing your view of life that health and happiness are most
precious, when looking back at time. Yet those we
often neglect due to the busy life in modern societies
- we tend to be preoccupied with work, deadlines, etc.
and misplace our priorities.

Your faith in God and the serving spirit are yet never
forsaken.

I am sure you'll be dearly remembered my many of your friends, myself particularly.

Wishing you a nice journey!
Your friend and colleague!
Son Vuong
CS/UBC

PS: I met your former PhD supervisor, Emeritus Professor Ramamoorthy at UBC Berkeley (such a nice brilliant
person), at the recent ISM'05 conference in Irvine.
He asked me to say hello to you.

We'll all send you our loving energy whenever we think of you!

Just recently I heard about the sad news of Sam.
I was very saddened about his early departure from life.
I vividly remember him as a very fine man, a true gentleman, excellent colleague and a researcher.
Last time I saw him was back in August 1999 when I visited UST in HK.
This is a great loss for our research community.
May God bless his soul and his family.

Dear all,

When I first attended Dr. Chanson's Computer Science 101 course at the
University of British Columbia back in the late '70, I was totally inspired
by this young and energetic professor. His was a role model for us
overseas Chinese and scholars. His kindness and willingness to go out of
his way to help us students have formed and shaped my attitute as a
computer science professional.

When I met up with him again a few years ago at a convention in HK, he was
still demonstrating his dedication and passion for the field. His was
trully an inspiration to us all.

The passing of Dr. Chanson is a tragic loss to the computer science
industry and the HK community.

With my deep condolences,

Dr. Sam Chanson was a valued member of the Department of Computer Science at the University of British Columbia for many years. His many contributions to the department and the leadership he provided for his colleagues and for his students made the department a better place for everyone. He is fondly remembered by all who knew him.

I was really shocked to learn the tragic news. Sam was initially my Ph.D. supervisor at UBC and later on became a member of my supervisory committee after he joined HKUST. Whether at UBC or HKUST, he was always a caring and knowledgeable professor and provided me with tremendous help on my thesis work. After he joined HKUST, he sometimes came back to visit Vancouver, and even during these brief stays in Vancouver, he often arranged to meet with me, asking about my thesis progress and offering his advice. I remember he also loved to talk about his new research interests at HKUST and smiled heartily when he mentioned that many of his research results were successfully applied in the industry.

Sam was not only a professor with profound knowledge and remarkable research results but also a man of high integrity. He will be dearly missed by myself and my family.

May Sam rest in peace. God bless you and take care of you.

Words and tears could not express how shocked I was to learn the sad news when I was planning our next visit to HK and looked forward to meet with Sam again.

I was grateful as a student of Sam at UBC between 85-92. Under Sam's guidence, not only I learnt how to do research and completed my degree, but also, more importantly, learnt from him about being a decent person. I look him up as a role model in honesty, integrity, tolerance, and caring. Sam treated all his students like his own family members, cared and supported them as much as he could. He was one of the best loved professor at UBC computer science department.

To me, Sam is not only just a Ph.D supervisor, but also a life long friend of my family, even my little kids remember how kind Sam was when we visited him in HK in 2002 summer. I miss you Sam. You will always be with us deep in our heart.

I was one of Prof. Sam's students at UBC (Canada). I am so shocked to learn the sad news and hope this were not true.

Prof. Sam is a great professor, a great supervisor and a great friend to me. He is a serious and dedicated scientist, with lots of patience and persistence. He once told us he usually did research until 2:00am. Prof. Sam once had the most graduate students at UBC CS under his supervision.

Prof. Sam lived in a simple life but he treated his students well like his children. He cared a lot about his students and gave them the help they needed.

In fact, I am still using one of his white study desks he gave me when he moved back to Hong Kong. The desk now becomes a precious memory of my professor.

Hope Prof. Samuel Chanson live in peace now. God bless his family.

My deepest condolence to Prof. Chanson's family and friends.

The sad news just came to me yesterday from my friends
who still have links to UBC.

It has been more than twenty years now and I still remember my greatest professor who had only taught me for one year. I remember him as a dedicated, knowledgeable, and caring professor. I also remember him giving me two research grants to fill in for my summer jobs while I was at UBC to help me out financially and kept me in school.
He gave me guidance for the small research jobs he assigned me and he had always been so precise and concise. I feel lucky to have such a professor in my memory.

May you rest in peace ...

In memory of Prof. Sam Chanson.

And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away." (Revelation 21:3-4)

Your faith and love towards God have demonstrated how a follower of Jesus should live his life. Your kindness and gentleness towards men have taught us how to be the light and salt of the world. May your life touch many, and through you they see Christ.

We shall meet again on that great and glory day.

Prof. Samuel Chanson is a professional, sincere, and diligence professor I have ever met. I have been impressed by his passion and scholarship in teaching since I first attended his class in Spring 2004. Not only Sam clearly explained the concepts to students, but also did he present them with his experience in an easily digestible manner: concise and to-the-point.

What I learnt most from Sam was his enthusiasm and seriousness in doing research. Sam was very patience to teach me to learn how to do academic research, starting from the very basic things, including from how to effectively read technical papers and how to do literature survey to the formulation of algorithms for solving a technical problem. I consider that Sam has already left me a valuable asset for the rest of my research life.

Sam was very open in providing assistance and support to his students. Regardless of the fact that Sam was quite busy in dealing with his academic and industrial duties, he always tried his best to allocate some time to meet with his students. On one occasion, I encountered an urgent research problem and would like to discuss with him. I noted that Sam was in his office and welcomed me to come to his office for a fruitful discussion even there was around 11p.m. I would remember his patience and caring devoted to me.

Sam was indeed a lovely and sincere person. I had an opportunity to join a mid-autumn festival gathering in his home. Sam again showed his love and caring to his students and friends he had. Sam cared about one's recent life and health, and provided his faithful advice. I will keep his care in my heart forever.

I learnt such a grief news this morning. Thus, it is sadly that I could not visit the service on Sep. 11. However, I will remember his enthusiasm, seriousness and dedication in work, and sincere and caring of people ever.

Sam, may you rest in peace and return to the God's family.

In memory of Prof. Samuel Chanson,

I am very sad that Sam left us. He is the kind of person who had that foresight. He founded the Information Security and Forensics Society, long before people visualize information security is a great risk area. Similarly forensics will be a hot area in the near future.

I know Sam in 2001 when I founded another association, the Professional Information Security Association with other colleagues. Sam was so open and generous to welcome our existence and invited us to one internal gathering of ISFS. We in fact need people like Sam who view new comers as collaborator, not competitors. He kicked off a good start of collaboration. Today, ISFS and PISA are working together in a number of occasions. The committee and members of the two associations are friends.

We are sad we have lost a good evangelist in security and forensics. We are sad to have lost a genuine friend and dependable person. Sam, you will be in our memory all the time!

Samuel is a good friend. When studying together in E.E. at the University of Hong Kong, he was the one taking study most seriously and taking part in many of the proper extracurricular activities, a good example for many of us. He had his mind set for graduate studies in the U.S. upon graduation, giving me the inspiration to follow his example.

Although our lives did not cross paths during our studies and work in North America, he kept me in touch with him through Christmas cards and emails, always with inspiring and encouraging messages. After he returned to Hong Kong, I would look him up whenever I visited and he would greet me with enthusiasm as before, sharing with me his love for God's family and for his dedication to his profession.

After I returned to Hong Kong, I would call him up whenever I needed some simple answers to some questions. There are just too many other things I could write about, such as how he trained me to improve on my badminton without ever embarrassing me. To follow his simple ways, I would like to say goodbye to my good friend and inspirator that you would always be remembered.

Just one more thing, Samuel has always talked about how proud he is of his daughters, Cheryl and Adrienne, about many interesting things that they are doing. Although our own children have met Samuel and his family only once, I hope that our next generation will somehow make connections, to continue a legacy in memory of Samuel, sharing in his faith of the love of God's family.

It was that morning on August 26, 2005. I was planning to visit Sam in the hospital at about 10:30am, because Sam's wife, Winifred, told me the night before that it's more appropriate to visit him around that time. I planned to share this Scripture, from Romans 8:35-39, with Sam again:

"Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or anguish, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? Even as it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; We were accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

I can still remember when I last shared this Scripture with Sam in the hospital. On that day we talked a lot, shared our experience, and even sang many hymns together. Sam was always so strong and courageous, even at the time when he was in fact suffering from great pain.

All of a sudden, I received a call from Winifred, saying that Sam returned "home" half an hour ago. How could that be? I knew Sam was going to leave us because his conditions were deteriorating fast, but I thought it would be at least a few days if not weeks...

My memory flew back to one day in December 2002. Although Sam was still very calm when he told me the bad news, I could observe some differences in him. When Sam said, "DY, I need more of your help in the future in running the Cyberspace Center", my tears almost ran down from my eyes.

Sam didn't give up though. For two years and a half, he didn't stop trying various new treatments courageously. Not only that, he always tried to come back to office whenever he could manage it. He replied every single e-mail, read and corrected his student's papers and theses, and always cared about the department and people. Moreover, he was always very cheerful. In fact, it was still Sam who was running Cyberspace Center most of the time. I know very well that his faith was from our Lord, because he believed that he had eternal life from Him. Sam also told me a few times that his relationship with God became closer since he was diagnosed to have cancer. This is a good sharing to remind us to stop, once in a while, amidst our busy life to rethink the meaning of life.

Dear Sam, my brother in Christ, I really miss you. However, it's comforting to know that I will see you again in the future. May God comfort and bless your family.

UC Berkeley, Purdue University and University of British Columbia。

- Internet security
- Public Key Infrastructure
- Firewall Evaluation Report
- Internet commerce
- Electronic payment systems

I am shocked!
Prof. Chanson taught me "Operating systems", which was one of the courses I enjoyed the most at HKUST. His love to students is apparent from his dedication to teaching. He explained concepts in such clear and illustrative ways and he used Cantonese to repeat important and difficult concepts. He is one of the professors I admire and respect the most.

"Not a single moment of God's given time was wasted, where everything has been done as perfectly as possible" -- this is how I will remember Sam Chanson, who continues to inspire us and touch our souls.

Sam was first known to me 12 years ago when he came to HKUST and taught his first graduate course here, in the spring semester 1993: COMP660 computer commmunications protocols.

Only two things about 660 have remained in my memory. One is asynchronous transfer mode (ATM), a hot topic in networking in the early 90s on which he spent many lecture hours. The other is the word "contribution" -- after one of his class, Y F Ho (my classmate) and I had a long talk with him on what this word means in academia. It was Sam who did most of the talking.

I didn't realize then in 1993 that in the coming 12 years, he was going to demonstrate exactly and correctly how this word ought to mean.

For all the students under his supervision, dating from his first PhD graduate at UST (C C Hui), MSc graduate (Y F Ho), to more recent MPhil graduate (T W Sze), and final year project students (like W S Tong, P W Siu), for over 12 years, I have been hearing consistent comments how Sam had been as an advisor: pragmatism, patience and dedication.

It is a really sad news that, my final year project supervisor, Prof. Samuel Chanson has passed away.

He is one of the most liked professors in our department by the undergraduates. He is also a favorite supervisor among graduate students. Although he has established his fame even before most of us were born, he never hesitate to spend time on teaching, reviewing reports, meeting with students, and writing recommendation letters. He was truly a friend, a teacher for all of us.

The luncheon for outstanding students on April 30th this year was when I saw him last time. He was a guest of his student, sitting on his wheelchair. When I was shaking hands with him and greeting to him, I was really wishing he could recover soon and come back to us. Unfortunately, he was forever taken from us.

Let me take a minute and pray, may him rest peacefully in heaven.

Abandoned Garden (Words and music by Michael Franks)
Dedicated to Sam,

"In your abandoned garden, sunlight still prevails:
The jasmine climbs the trellis fragrantly, the
jacaranda ultravioletly sways.

The blossom. each of them by your hand planted,
Will, even if I tell them of your sudden
Disappearance from us,
Not believe the tale.

In your abandoned garden, beauty is unchanged:
The hummingbird still hovers for the scent the
frangipane so seductively displays.

Camellias, each of them by your hand planted,
The sadness of your sudden disappearance still
unknown to them,
Await the kiss of rain.
"

Let him rest in peace.

Dear Family of Prof. Chanson,

Prof. Chanson were the greatest supervisor during my final year.

He is a great and caring boss during my work in the Cyberspace Center. He always fully supports, concerns, and trusts us for whatever challenges we faced or decisions we made in past 6 years.

He is one of the greatest brother in Christ I have ever met. I still remember that he must preach the Good News to all non-Christians who walked into his ward.

He is always in my mind. May our Lord Jesus Christ let him rest in peace and comforts all your heart.

Emmanuel,
