Prof Fangzhen LIN Elected as AAAI Fellow

CSE faculty member Prof. Fangzhen Lin has just been elected a Fellow of The Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI). The announcement came at the annual AAAI conference in San Francisco, USA, February 4-8, 2017. Prof. Lin was one of the seven researchers elected to AAAI Fellows this year, and the only one from Asia. He was recognised for his "significant contributions to formal theories of knowledge representation, in particular nonmonotonic logics, answer-set programing, and theories of action."

The AAAI was founded in 1979 and presided over by notable figures in computer science such as Allen Newell, Edward Feigenbaum, Marvin Minsky and John McCarthy early on. It is a leading organisation in AI and currently has over 4,000 members worldwide. Its Fellows program was started in 1990 to "recognize individuals who have made significant, sustained contributions - usually over at least a ten-year period - to the field of artificial intelligence." Very few AAAI Fellows are from Asia, and HKUST has two now. Prof. Lin joins the distinguished company of Prof. Qiang Yang, New Bright Chair professor and Head of CSE, also an AAAI Fellow.
